Canadian Stone Carving Exhibition
August 6 and 7, 2011

I just finished carving a limestone sculpture, in two days and using hand tools only.  This was part of the a group stone carving exhibition at Dairyfest, in Winchester.  All finished sculptures (including mine) were auctioned off at the end of Dairyfest, on Sunday, August 7, 201, and all monies raised were donated to the Winchester Downtown Revitalization Committee.

Thanks to the great Dairyfest organizers, for all your hospitality during the Exhibition.

AND thanks to the person who bought my sculpture, 'The Garden Charmer'.  Enjoy your good luck sculpture!!!

Here are pictures of the sculpture I created, from beginning to end.

What I Started With:  A Basic Indiana Limestone Block

End of Day One

I knew from the beginning the kind of thing I wanted to do with this stone--I had thought about this before the festival.  As I sculpted, I worked with the feel of the stone, and modified my original vision where I felt it should be modified--it's hard to explain, but anyone who's worked with stone would know what I mean, I think.  All of the carving was done with hand tools, mainly chisel and hammer.

A lot was done after Day One, but a lot more detail work remained for day two, especially around the base.

End of Exhibition, Piece Ready for Auction

Since the sculpture was meant to be in the garden, I decided to create a bowl-like depression, with carvings at the bottom and sides, that would provide the birds with a drink of water when it rains--it also bounces the light, creating a halo effect.  Below and to the side are views of the finished sculpture.  I wanted to keep a slightly rougher look, to suit the overall structure and theme of the sculpture.
P.S.  Yes, my hands were sore at the end of the Dairyfest exhibition--but it was so much fun to do, and definitely worth it!

And, as a bonus, the sculpture helped raise money for Winchester.
